Vectors can be added together arithmetically. Vectors can be added or subtracted by adding and subtracting the respective “x” and “y” components, this will produce a NEW vector which is called the RESULTANT.



Note that vector subtraction can be achieved using vector addition and negative vector elements (in other words 3 - 4 is the same as 3 + - 4). Vectors can also be added diagrammatically by linking respective vector arrows "nose to tail".


IMPORTANT NOTE


If any of the vectors is being subtracted, this will possibly affect the orientation (direction) of the resultant. Let us look at an example to make this a little clearer.
