Calculating the Required Mass of a Reactant
We can manipulate calculations like this in order to be able to calculate the amounts of particular reactants required to make specified amounts of product. These calculations lead to what should properly be regarded as the "theoretical yield" but further calculations in this field will show us what the "actual yield" is, enabling us to work out the percentages. To start with in this topic will consider calculating the necessary mass of a given reactant to produce a stated mass of product.
Once again, a good mastery of moles and mole calculations will yield dividends because these types of calculations are usually quite simple but can provide many marks. Let us take a look at a quick worked example and then we will deal with several more.
